Masks

I went on mask phase lately and I bought a lot of masks!

I went to my local drugstore, Guardian, by chance, and my all time favourite mask – My Beauty Diary Black Pearl Mask was selling at $7.25 per box of 10 instead of the usual $14.50. I grabbed all stock in sight. This price is even lower than in Taiwan! I don’t know why there is such discount, because when I went to another outlet, it wasn’t on sale.

Combined with my existing stash I have about 100 masks to go around. That will last me a whole year if I use it every other day!

I also got the face shop Raspberry Roots Sleeping Mask. There was 20% off so it cost only $20.70 after discount! I must say I like the pump packaging, though it’s not as dainty as a tub, it is easier to dispense. However, hydration wise, it isn’t very hydrating. The consistency is very light.

I went to lush and impulsively bought one of their fresh facial masks, the Catastrophe Cosmetic Fresh Face Mask (75g, $24). It is quite overpriced in Singapore.

Avoid disasters with the power of blueberries! Fresh blueberries are rich in beneficial antioxidants, vitamins and minerals to reduce inflammation and act as a mild antiseptic. Soothing chamomile, Irish moss and almond oil work with the gentle cleansing action of calamine to save your skin. Apply to clean skin, avoiding the eye area. Leave for five to ten minutes, then rinse away with warm water. Keep chilled.

I’ve used it once so far, and will use every 3 days to finish within a month, and so far I love it! my face feels smoother after use.

Naruko Haul

I am back from the Japalang sales. I did not manage to get anything from K-Palette but I bought a load of naruko products!

It’s not dirt cheap but just 30% off the Singapore retail price. I was going to order from naruko as I am out of moisturiser so of course I will welcome a 30% discount.

I bought 2 of the Apple Seed & Tranxemic Acid Hydra Milk. I decided to try this instead of my previous rose & snow fungus milky lotion because I wanted some whitening effect! I decided to get the serum too, since it was $10 cheaper than usual. Perhaps using it over my whole face will enhance the effects.

There was no Apple Seed night gelly, to my dismay, but there was the Magnolia one and I delightedly got 2 of it! it’s for brightening and firming and I guess I could do with those. It’s only $15 each. The Taiwan price works out to be around $13 so the mark up is not big!

I can’t wait to use them to see the effect.

I also got 2 backups of my favourite sunscreen, the narcissus bb sunscreen. It’s $18 instead of the usual $25.90. I guess these should last me til the end of the year!

As much as I love most of naruko’s products, I have to say I don’t really like their sheet masks. The shape is ill fitting, and the Job’s tears one especially, do not adhere well to my face. It is also not dirt cheap at around $1.50 a piece. I would recommend My Beauty Diary for masks still, but for skincare, get Naruko and Hada Labo!

Clarisonic Mia Log 1

It’s been 1 week since I’ve had it.

My routine will be:

Morning – normal

Night – Shu Uemura HPCO Fresh to remove all makeup, Clarisonic + Hado Labo SHA wash in the shower for 1 minute, Hada Labo SHA Lotion, Sheet Mask, Shiseido White Lucent Serum on pigmentation, Estee Lauder ANR Eye treatment, Laneige Water Sleeping Pack_EX

My skin feels evidently smoother and soft with the use of the clarisonic. The brush feels rough on my face but it doesn’t scratch it or anything so it’s fine. Maybe I will get the delicate brush head when it’s time to change it.

I find that my Hada Labo lotion absorbs easier too.

I do not have much blackhead issues so I cannot comment on that but I’m sure it will dislodge the heads better than manual washing.

I did not experience any drying effects from it comparing to normal washing so I can safely say it doesn’t dry skin out.

Facial Masks Review

I have used countless face masks but I shall only mention about 4 facial masks that I’ve used lately.

1. My Beauty Diary Black Pearl Mask

Price: $0.80 from Taiwan, $1.30 from Singapore

Origin: Taiwan

They have revamped their masks about 2 years ago and now the sheets are these transulent type, which is the latest technology nowadays compared to the thicker opaque tissue sort. It retains the serums quite well so a lot of products goes onto your face with the mask instead of staying in the packaging. The new mask’s shape is fine but I would prefer the gap between the nose and mouth to be smaller as I really hate having mask on my lips. I usually snip it off.

This mask is my HG mask as the whitening effect is instant and it moisturises well.

I highly recommend this! it is the best mask among all My Beauty Diary series.

2. Leader’s Insolution Melatox Mask

Price: $3.50

Origin: Korea

I wasn’t interested in this when I first saw it advertised on blogs but when a non sponsored blogger mentioned that it was good I was tempted to try it, hearing that the whitening effect is good.

The mask sheet itself was fine, the new technology and all. However, I didn’t find the whitening effect to be spectacular.

I’d say this isn’t worth the price as it could buy almost 4 MBD masks!

3. Naruko Rose & Snow Fungus Mask

Price: $1.50

Origin: Taiwan

I love naruko products so I got this to try. The mask sheets are of the latest technology too, and it is dripping with serum. The hydration effect is reasonable, but at price point I’d rather get MBD masks.

4. ODBO Vitamin C Mask

Price: gift from korea

Origin: Korea

I do not like this. The shape is very odd and it doesn’t cover up my forehead. I guess I generally do not like Korean masks and Taiwanese Masks fits me better!

Hada Labo Haul

My favourite Hada Labo SHA Lotion was running low (right most bottle) so I thought it’s the time to get the refill ($18.90)! I bought everything at Watsons. The refill has 150ml and the original has 170ml. It makes sense because you don’t wait till your bottle is dry empty before stocking up do you. However, it sucks to know that the full bottle ($22.90) comes with a free 20g face wash at Guardian which works out to be a better deal but oh well at least I did my part for the environment by getting a refill pack and I’m going to get good karma!

I got the face wash as well for $12.90. I previously used the AHA/BHA face wash and I broke out from it. I guess I generally do not respond well to AHAs at all. I got the SHA wash this time and it is going to work!

I got a 4 piece travel/ sample kit for $15.90. It is rather overpriced but I like how it is concise and compact.

I do like naruko face wash, but I find that it doesn’t foam up much. I was thinking I should use a more foamy cleanser with my clarisonic thus I decided to try Hada Labo. It is cheaper too.

Sleeping Mask Review

Typically, my skincare steps would be: naruko rose & snow fungus foam -> Hada Labo SHA Lotion -> sheet mask -> serums -> sleeping mask

Naruko Tea Tree Night Gelly

This was the first sleeping mask I tried. The texture is light weight and when applied it has a slight sensation, typical of astringent from tea tree products, but not very strong. It feels like a gel moisturiser and sort of ‘dries up’, leaving a not so sticky surface, but when you wash it off the next day it sorts of ‘dissolves’ and you can indeed tell that there was a layer on your face. That is good, because it shows it remains on your face doing its job overnight, but not leaving you sticky like an oil slick.

Naruko Rose and Snow Fungus Night Gelly

The texture is somewhat like the Tea Tree one, just that it was not as light and didn’t have the astringent feeling. It was slightly more sticky, but still belonged to the non-sticky category so it is still comfortable to have overnight. This is supposed to be more hydrating than the Tea Tree one.

Laneige Water Sleeping Pack_EX

This one is very hydrating and feels thicker than just a gel moisturiser. However, the surface will dry up too, so it still is comfortable to have on all night. I love the cosmetic smell of this too. If your concern is plain hydrating, I would recommend this.

Bioessence Bird’s Nest Whitening Sleeping Mask

I got this as a sample which could be used for 2 nights. The texture of the gel was kind of choppy rather than smooth. It smells like cheap cosmetic smell to me. But those aside, what I really disliked about this was how sticky it was. It never dries up and it leaves my face sticky the whole night, even with the air con on. It makes me look like an oil slick. As for the whitening effect, I am not sure. For sure, the morning after both nights I feel I have appeared fairer but I think the credit goes to the My Beauty Diary Black Pearl sheet mask I used for these 2 days prior to application of sleeping mask. I do not recommend this product at all.

Skincare Products – Sheet Masks

My Beauty Diary Masks

Others I have used:

· Neutrogena Deep Hydration Mask

· ZA True White Essence Mask

· Ettusais Acne Whitening Dual Mask

· Watsons Bird’s Nest Mask

My staple mask for now is My Beauty Diary Black Pearl mask. It brightens up my skin slightly and it’s apparent after each use. Typically, sheet masks only helps to hydrate the skin, no matter which flavor you choose. I’ve tried almost every one of the My Beauty Diary mask but somehow Black Pearl works best for me.

Neutrogena, Za and Ettusais masks are good too, but at higher prices. My Beauty Diary can go as low as 80c a sheet so it’s good for daily use. Watsons and Neutrogena can cost $2/sheet during promotion time, Za $19/box of 6 during 20%+20% sales, and Ettusais cost $49.00/box of 7.

I find these work better than My Beauty Diary, giving a more radiant skin after use. Za True White really gives a brighter skin while Ettusais is just like Za just that it comes with 2 pieces for each mask, to suit the T zone and the U zone. However, using cheap mask daily is better than using premium masks once a week.

On the other hand, among the Za True White range, only the mask and foundation are loves for me. The other products break me out.

Skincare Products – Serums & Moisturisers

Shiseido White Lucent Concentrated Brightening Serum, Kanebo Blanchir Whitening Smoothing Conditioner, Estee Lauder Idealist Pore Minimizing Skin Refresher, Estee Lauder Advanced Night Repair Eye

I have also used:

  • HABA White Lady
  • Skinfood Peach Sake Pore Serum
  • Sekkisei Eye Cream
  • Nivea Aqua Sensation Eye Cream
  • Ettusais Acne Whitening Essence

I have not touched the Shiseido Serum yet but it’s for whitening. HABA White Lady is a vitamin C serum and I highly recommend it, minus the fact that it has to be kept in the fridge and can only be kept for 3 months. However, it did lighten some areas so it does work. Moreover, I could always do with some vitamin C. The Ettusais essence is also for whitening, in particular, acne marks. However, I did not see significant results with it.

The Blanchir Whitening Smoothing Conditioner is like a pore serum, so is the Estee Lauder Idealist Serum. They are decent to me, but somehow it didn’t work as well as Skinfood Peach Sake Pore Serum. However, that was way back in 2007 or 2008. When I repurchased the Skinfood serum, I found the texture and effect to be different and lacking.

Nivea’s eye cream works decently too. However, it dried out before I could finish using it. The Sekkisei eye cream was decent as well. A little goes a long way and the 15ml jar lasted for probably more than a year and it didn’t try out. I’m currently using Estee Lauder’s and so far, so good. the texture is more like a serum than a cream and there’s a sensation when applied on. However, the sensation wasn’t as apparent in subsequent applications.

Naruko Tea Tree Oil Out Night Gelly, Naruko Tea Tree Oil Out Balancing Moisturiser, Aqua Label Enhancer WT, Shiseido White Lucent Brightening Protective Moisturiser SPF 16, Shiseido White Lucent Brightening Moisturising Gel, Sekkisei Lotion, Sekkisei Day Essence, Sekkisei Emulsion

I have also used:

· Biotherm Aquasource Non Stop Oglio Thermal Gel

· Ettusais AC Aqua Shooter

Since the Naruko Gelly is a non wash off product it’s as good as a night moisturiser. I like how it’s a gel and not a cream.

The Aqua Label and Ettusais are both effectors rather than moisturisers, and their function is to seal in the moisturiser.

Biotherm Aquasource is the best moisturiser I’ve used and I’ll repurchase it soon.

Skincare Products – Lotion & Mists

MAC Fix+, Laneige Make Up Mist, Hada Labo Super Hyarulonic Acid Lotion, Jurlique Rosewater Balancing Mist, Sekkisei Lotion, Shiseido White Lucent Brightening Refining Softener, Aqua Label White AC Lotion, AMPM Skin Wakeup Hydra Refresher

Other Mists I have used:

· Avene Thermal Spring Water

· Vichy Thermal Spa Water Spray

· Skinfood White Grape Makeup Fixer (discontinued)

I’ll talk about mist/ makeup fixers first. I’m currently using MAC but my favourite is actually Skinfood. However, it’s been discontinued so I have no choice. MAC Fix+ is decent though. I tried it merely because it is very raved. The Laneige mist didn’t do much for me. I have yet to try Jurlique and AMPM.

Other lotions I have used:

· Ettusais AC Skin Version Up

· Biotherm Aquasource Lotion

The Aqua Label AC range didn’t work for me and I stopped using it after a few uses. The Sekkisei Lotion is good except that it has way too much alcohol. The Shiseido softener is more gentle and it softens the skin to prepare for moisturiser. However, my current favourite is the Hada Labo SHA Lotion! It’s unbeatable. Everyone should try it. It’s very mild and strongly hydrating (moisture, not sebum) with humectants.

In layman terms, humectants draws water to the skin, thus hydrating it. The other hydration type of component would be emollients, which are like oils, as they form a barrier to prevent transepidermal water loss, thus retaining moisture. So for best results, follow up with a moisturiser that suits your skin type!
